Chair of Art Education and Visual Literacy (W2)) at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities

Universität Passau, Passau

The University of Passau owes its strong visibility and good repute to excellent research, in-novative teaching and its tight-knit international academic networks. Some 13,000 students and more than 1,100 staff study and work on our University campus, which is located a stone's throw from the historical Old Town of Passau and combines state-of-the-art technical infrastruc-ture with award-winning architecture. Internationally successful high-tech companies and a vibrant start-up scene, coupled with a rich culture and Lower Bavarian traditions, give Passau and the surrounding area a special appeal that makes it a great place to live and work. The Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Passau invites applications for the tenured civil-service post of: Chair of Art Education and Visual Literacy (pay grade W2) The postholder will represent the full breadth of the subject in research and teaching. He or she is expected to place a research focus on art mediation in school and non-school settings as well as the associated pedagogical and didactic subject areas. This focus should specifically give appropriate consideration to questions of visual literacy. The postholder will deliver courses in art education for the Teacher Education Programmes - including as third-part minor didactics ('Dritteldidaktik') - for primary schools, 'Mittelschule' and 'Realschule' and the Bachelor and Master of Education programmes. Furthermore, the professorship's remit includes supervision of students enrolled in the Teacher Education Programmes as they undergo the practice teach-ing components of their programme and during their involvement in the Teacher Education Cen-tre and in interdisciplinary projects such as SKILL, which aims to shape the future of teacher education in a variety of areas, including digitally supported teaching and learning. Research and teaching at the University of Passau are focused on the guiding themes of Digi-talisation, Networked Society and (Internet) Cultures; Europe and Global Transformation; and Migration, Sustainable Development and Just Order. As a forward-looking, internationally visible and attractive university for Europe, the University of Passau seeks to make a significant contri-bution towards solving Europe's current and future challenges. Members of all faculties are in the process of establishing a unique, internationally-orientated forum for ground-breaking inter-disciplinary research on one of the greatest challenges of our time: the societal implications of digitalisation. A willingness to co-operate on this interdisciplinary and cross-faculty project is expected of all future colleagues. The Faculty of Arts and Humanities is characterised by a wide range of geographical, thema-tic, methodological and academic subjects, as represented by its chairs and professorships. It underlines the regional specificities of inter- and transdisciplinary research and teaching as well as the inclusion of current social topics in times of transformation, without losing sight of funda-mental long-term research. Individual lines of scientific enquiry are bundled under the faculty's guiding theme of 'Society in Digital Transformation', which rests on the three pillars of cultures - values - identities. The successful candidate will be educated to doctoral level in a related field and either possess a formal postdoctoral qualification, such as the German 'Habilitation', or equivalent academic and comparable artistic achievements, garnered as part of a prior assistant professor or compa-rable role (e.g. German 'Juniorprofessur') or outside the higher education system. He or she will have demonstrated pedagogical aptitude and academic excellence, the latter being generally established on the basis of the quality of his/her doctoral research and subsequent achieve-ments, as applicable. Furthermore, the successful candidate will have a minimum of three years' experience teaching Art Education at a school or comparable education institution (cf. art. 7(1) of the Bayerisches Hochschulpersonalgesetz (Bavarian Higher Education Employment Act, BayHSchPG). In accordance with art. 10(3)(1) BayHSchPG, candidates must not be more than 52 years of age at the time of their appointment. The University of Passau actively promotes equal opportunities for all genders as well as diver-sity in the workforce; therefore, applications are welcome from all candidates who fulfil the re-quisite qualifications, without regard to gender, cultural or social background, religion, world view, disability or sexual identity. As the University of Passau wishes to raise the proportion of women in research and teaching, female academics are expressly encouraged to apply. This post may be available part-time, provided a suitable number of candidates are willing to work on a work-share basis. Furthermore, this post is suitable for those with severe disabilities. Severely disabled persons are given preference over non-disabled applicants who do not otherwise have statutory preferential status if their overall personal aptitudes, skills and qualifications are equal.
